Vista sticks huge great arrows all over your shortcuts.
This is bad.
In XP you could use TweakUI to sort things out.
It doesn't work with Vista.
This is also bad.
Frameworkx make a little programme (the snappily titled Frameworkx Windows Vista Shortcut Overlay Remover) that sorts stuff out without the hassle of registry hacking. Get it here.
Last weekend I went on a residential trip with the school and a bunch of hyper but totally fantastic Year 5 kids. We used to go down to Dorset but this year went just down the road to the Malvern Hills Outdoor Centre. It's just the best place in the world. Everything in Tony Blair's 'Every Child Matters' manifesto, from citizenship to activity to green issues and back again is covered by the centre. It's the sort of place you'd want your kids to go to to get some confidence and self esteem while doing new, healthy outdoor activities and learning about themselves and how to be part of a team.
So you won't be surprised to hear that Worcestershire County Council are closing it down.
The current funding (around £300 thousand) is too much and someone has decided that the enjoyment of the thousands of kids who pass through it each year means squat.
So the funding is up. And the business plans the centre has are currently on hold. Staff are unsure as to their future and schools are not able to book beyond the next year.
It'll end up as a commercial venture for 'business men' to run around 'team building'. Or as prime building land. Either way, kids will lose out big time.
This is wrong.
What can be done. Who knows? The staff have been gagged. The letters have been all but ignored. But maybe, just maybe, the more people who know about it, the more people who write letters to MPs, to Worcester County Council and the the centre . . .
Well, maybe as a combined effort we can save a valuable resource.
After all, apparently 'EVERY child matters'.
But not if it costs too much eh, WCC.
